Good Bye H.S.T

"There was no point in fighting -- on our side or theirs," he wrote. "We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave. So now, less than five years later, you can go up on a steep hill in Las Vegas and look West, and with the right kind of eyes you can almost see the high-water mark -- the place where the wave finally broke and rolled back."

WoRd Up: Word of the Day

mobile speed bump n. A car that travels at the speed limit to force the cars behind to do the same.

Example Citations:

The city of Vancouver is exploring the idea of sanctioning a grass-roots traffic-calming program that enlists the silent majority of reasonable, rational, law-abiding drivers to stop being so silent.

Instead they'd slap NEIGHBORHOOD PACE CAR stickers on their vehicles and set a highly visible example by rolling down Vancouver streets at lawful speeds.

Yes, you heard right: Making Vancouver streets safer simply by making a public point of driving the posted speed limit.

WoRd Up: Word of the Day

indicia......
Had to find the meaning for this great $1.50 word. Now the story for the daily buzz word is i activley find the word in reading or speech. Todays' word: indicia gratefully comes from a porn site. Well not the word, but instead the story of i found the word. I was watching a preview to a porn site and the background music just happended to be "Come on Lets Get Happy" by the Partridge Family. I wondered what person what give the right to use this song in a porn....so i looked up who own the rights and this word came up. I thought it seemed much like "indicator" and i was close....its reserved mostly for legal jargon.....here is the link...learn it and love it: http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=indicia+&x=19&y=12

More Lies From the Corporate Media

To those of us that actually pay attention this headline isn't worth shit. It's a big "No duh."

But here's the "Man Bites Dog" grabber... the lies are coming from the source. Within the last few days it has been revealed that two sensational stories were actually lies propagated by those who claimed to be involved.

One is of a woman who claimed her husband was a solider in Iraq who died taking a bullet for an Iraqi child. Her husband was not in Iraq. He isn't even in the military. http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/02/10/gi.hoax.ap/

The second, revealed earlier today, involves the woman who supposedly threw her infant from the window of her moving vehicle. LIE. The woman who supposedly did this is the woman who called it in and is actually the boys mother.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/US/02/11/newborn.tossed/index.html
Incase you were wondering, yes, both of these incidents happened in morally superior red states (Colorado and Florida respectively).

WTF. Lies, lies, lies, No longer the domain of the powerful elite. We can all lie too and they'll buy it and sell it right back to us because we will buy it too (by "they," let me clarify that CNN is my source for both of these stories, but the AP is most likely the root). A sensational story hits the wire and every editor, producer, and sadly, blogger is on it like (metaphor of choice).

I heard some of my students talking about the baby tossing incident in my class today, like it actally happened. It didn't happen. This is the power. Don't be blinded. Don't have faith, don't believe.

NFL, MLB, & NBA TAX EXEMPT

Major cities with education funding issues should stick it to major league sports. Since 1943, the National Football League has remained a nonprofit organization, which exempts their profit from taxation.
In the article "Critics question leagues tax-exempt activities ", Josh Peters questions the necessity for the NFL to remain tax exempt. Further, he states,
"The IRS requires that tax-exempt nonprofit groups spell out their missions and keep a copy of their applications after the IRS grants exemption. So what is the NFL's official nonprofit mission, and are stadium loans a reasonable extension of that mission.
There's no telling. The NFL said it has lost its copy of the application it filed with the IRS in 1942, and the IRS also said it was unable to find a copy of the application. "

.......Note: C. Rice wants to become the commissioner of the NFL. Who the hell doesn't want to be?
Do you think this is right? If you don't agree with the current tax-exemption status (and the missing mission statement), please call the IRS toll free at 1-800-829-0433.

Propaganda Cha-Cha-Cha!

The Bush II Machine has never been straight with the American public nor ethical in any of their practices, so it's difficult to feel like this is any sort of revelation, but it's always fun to connect a few dots.

Clues to just how blatantly we are being lied to by Bush & Co. began to surface last year with the release of fake "news pieces" with a fake reporter, Karen Ryan, promoting Bush's prescription drug bill. What was actually being presented was covert propaganda by the Bush Administration through the Department of Heath and Human Services.

More recently, a payola scandal has come to light, where it seems to be Bush's policy to buy up conservative pundits so they can place his fundamentalist policies front and center of their syndicated columns, radio shows, and even raise the issues while appearing on news programs. All the time keeping secret their ties to Bush & Co.

So far the following folks have admittied to this disgraceful practice:

Armstrong Williams

For $240,000, funneled through the Department of Education (Sorry kids, it's evaporated milk and saltines for lunch again), Williams worked tirelessly to promote the No Child Left Behind Act.

Maggie Gallagher

For a total of $41,500 ($21,500 from the Dept. Health and Human Services and $20,000 from the Justice Department), Gallagher pushed the Community Healthy Marriage Initiative and for a Constitutional Amendment to define marriage as a purely heterosexual affair.

Michael McManus

McManus took in $10,000 for himself to promote the benefits of boy-girl marital bliss, but was generous enough to share $49,000 in government grants with his Marriage Savers Foundation.

It's amazing how all of these folks, who claim to be torch bearers for the oncoming onslaught of moral values in this new amerikan century, can act in such unethical, deceitful ways. McManus is just the latest in what is sure to be a long list of talking heads who have been on the take. Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly (Shoot, just about anyone on Fox)? We're looking in your direction.

Just keep in mind that none of this would be possible without the willing support of the corporate run media... who by the way are currently working for even FURTHER consolidation of ownership, whereby one behemoth will be able to own and operate just about every TV, Radio, Cable, and Newspaper outlet in your town.

Amber alert : Bush is a war criminal

So what the fuck is this story about a woman, 8 months pregnant is murdered and then has her still live fetus cut from her body?

http://www.cnn.com/2004/LAW/12/18/missouri.fetus/index.html

This happened in a red state people. Missouri. Having never been, I'd generally say, Missourians are good people.

But this kind of thing is a red state thing. Lives get twisted, lives get prescripted.

Sure violent crime happens anywhere, but this is a special kind of crime. The need to have what you desire more than life, so that you kill the source of what you need. It's beyond reason.

It's truly sad. I am sad to hear this story. It's so fucking ridiculous.

And what's worse is that it doesn't even compare to the far more farcical feats of his Shrubness, the Almighty W., and his Minions of Full Faith.

Let's watch the local and network news programs and see which of these truly sensational stories get the bulk of front pages, headlines, and tape tickers.

God bless the USA. We are morally superior to all others.

THREE DAYS ON THE DIAMOND

The War Crimes Files - W. strikes again!

As reported by the award winning "Democracy NOW!" news program...

New Evidence Of U.S. Torture in Iraq Emerges

Newly released military documents show Marines carried out mock executions, used electric shocks and burned prisoners. The documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act has revealed that at least 13 Marines were court martialed for taking part in the abuse.

None of their cases had been previously reported. In one case, three marines were convicted after they "ordered four juvenile Iraqi looters to kneel beside two shallow fighting holes and a pistol was discharged to conduct a mock execution".

The American Civil Liberties Union, which obtained the documents, has accused the Pentagon of withholding more information on torture in Iraq. Meanwhile the Pentagon has admitted that at least eight detainees have died in US custody in Afghanistan. The admission came following a critical report by Human Rights Watch that assailed the military's "culture of impunity" on prisoner abuse.

god bless Amy Goodman!
